Pomeroy's Update June - August 2009

Who says winter is boring? Entertainments in Christchurch this year will be huge! June sees the Lyttleton Harbour Festival of Lights, a mid-winter light spectacular, and the ultimate sporting theatre—All Blacks v Italy—right here at AMI Stadium. In July catch the fastest show on earth ‘Starlight Express’, the entire school holidays are chock full of Kid’s Fest fun, and then begins the 8th Biennial Christchurch Arts Festival—two weeks of theatre, dance, music, cabaret, circus and visual arts. August rounds off with the NZ Grand National Racing Carnival at Riccarton Park. Cooo!

Winter looks great and autumn has been mighty fine at Pom’s too. Talk about swingin’ from the riggin’—the Pirate Party went off like a blasted cannon and there was not a dry shipmate aboard on the night. Despite yet another dark & stormy night, the bar was bedecked in a shipshape style, the wenches were comely indeed and the brethren of the coast swaggered and jigged on the dance floor. Ye scurvy deck apes were fantastic and we thank ye as soon as stab ye in the back!

Current construction and renovation targets achieved, Steve can be found around the bar a lot more these days and is a dedicated family guy and part-time pirate lord. Victoria knows her place (uh oh—well, it is her kitchen!), simmering quinces and feijoas, concocting very wicked and delicious desserts enough to give that simpering fridge-raider, Nigella, a nocturnal spanking with a wooden spoon. Proud are the parents, as Keeley and Ava have recently acquired their Bar Manager licences. Excitement looms on the horizon with the eventual replacement of the beloved Pomeroy’s carpet. Steve will accept votes and suggestions—written on the back of a $20 note.

Head chef Daniel has settled brilliantly into his work, ably assisted by chef Tom, and their menu has proven to be very popular. The smiling new face behind the bar belongs to Skye, from Canada, and while Jens is recovering from surgery, a couple of strapping English lads, Luke & Jack, fill in for him in the kitchen. Hey, two Englishmen to do the work of one German? That can’t be right…!

If you’re looking forward to winter and all it has to offer, you’ll be drooling with anticipation over the great new menu, clamouring to attend the wine and beer tastings, booking in early for an awesome Mid-winter Xmas banquet, boarding the courtesy bus to the big game and puckering up to give Ava a delightful kiss on her 25th birthday!

The fire’s hot, the cleansing ales are chilled (but not too chilled), the lighting’s sympathetic and the welcome is always warm at Pomeroy’s.
