Locals Like... The Tennis Ladies

Ladies?

<!--StartFragment-->

Yes. Suzanne Porter, Barbara Dawe, Philippa Cooke & Jane Boyle.

How do you all know each other?

Our husbands have been friends since the 1980’s. We’ve been friends since the 90’s and played squash together until we all got pregnant about the same time. Between us we have 8 kids and they’re all friends too. Then we discovered we played tennis at the same level…

Where do you play?

Wilding Park, indoors in the winter and outdoors during the summer. Barbara has the killer serve but Jane is catching her up. We like to play centre court but don’t seem to get the audience we deserve.

She’s a hard road finding the perfect pub…

Being free of children and husbands and, after a satisfying match, we tried a few neighbourhood bars in the area but were disappointed. Then one night we spotted Pomeroy’s and have been coming here for 1 1/2 years. We enjoy the weekly debrief, talk about kids and solve the world’s problems.

What’s so good about Pom’s?

It’s a nice, relaxed English pub with no pokies. We like the nooks, the brazier and the friendly staff who make us feel like real locals. Bar snacks are always tempting as are the pickled onions, salty bread and zesty cheese. We are two gin drinkers and two beer drinkers but the little tasters are appreciated. Although we like to keep it to ourselves, we occasionally bring our families down here.

What do you have to do to get Pomeroy’s sports shirts?

We don’t know! Can anyone tell us? Steve keeps taunting us with talk of side gussets…

No offensive players here—just some good all-rounders with nice follow through!
